| So why have a "Design of the Month"
contest? There are an endless number of reasons why a company would begin such a
contest. It could be to promote the hobby; to promote sales of model parts or just
to have fun. FlisKits, Inc. decided to start a
Design of the Month contest for several reasons, the biggest being that we frequently
encountered model rocketeers discussing the lack of such contests in the industry
today. In private mail, in web-forums, newgroups and at club launches we were
hearing the same desire for a company to come up with a Design of the Month contest.
Another key reason would be to promote the hobby. Our
belief is that if want to design, then you clearly have a sincere interest in your hobby.
Further, you need the skills necessary in order to express that interest in new and
creative designs. A contest, specifically one that offers valuable prizes and public
recognition, makes designing a fun and exciting activity. All of this will help to
encourage beginning rocketeers to see additional "value" in staying with the
hobby and allow that early interest to evolve into the skills and experience needed to
design. That alone promotes growth in the hobby. By publishing the designs, we
help to promote the hobby further by providing those who like to build, but may not be
interested in designing, more variety of designs from which to choose.
The other reason (to be frank) is that providing a dynamic
contest (new entries and winners every month) we are providing a fun and exciting reason
for our customers and friends to frequent our web site to see what's new.
