LAUNCH DAY!
We begin the day with the painting of our models:
dsc02518.jpg (90472 bytes)
We had both groups with us today for the painting and launch, but only about half of the total were able to attend
dsc02521.jpg (82233 bytes)
Hard at work, each table has a nice selection of colors to choose from
dsc02522.jpg (70256 bytes)
Coming up with an idea, this young man works his art on the nose cone
dsc02524.jpg (66441 bytes)
KEWL!  A shark.
dsc02525.jpg (91644 bytes)
And the Sinistar - A name from a popular video game
dsc02526.jpg (73507 bytes)
And Batman makes an appearance, painted up by, who else? Superman! LOL
dsc02527.jpg (80946 bytes)
Purple, red and pink.  The colors of passion!
dsc02528.jpg (90068 bytes)
I was wondering what this design was going to be...  I was surprised!
dsc02530.jpg (90216 bytes)
A little more detail and I am still none the wiser.
dsc02532.jpg (89926 bytes)
Our director, Kristin, takes her time to put a very nice finish on her fins.
dsc02533.jpg (75058 bytes)
More work on the Batman logo
dsc02534.jpg (82022 bytes)
Creativity at work here!
dsc02535.jpg (83708 bytes)
Nice rainbow effect.
dsc02536.jpg (84515 bytes)
As you can see, there were several models that never got painted.
dsc02540.jpg (66248 bytes)
That rocket I couldn't figure out?  It was Captain America!  Kewl!
dsc02541.jpg (62909 bytes)
And here's the shark rocket, with custom dorsal fin!
dsc02545.jpg (83915 bytes)
Here we are preping the rockets for flight.  Why prep out doors when the classroom is MUCH warmer!?
The Launch!
dsc02547.jpg (113364 bytes)
Here is our crew, rockets prepped and ready for launch!
dsc02548.jpg (117116 bytes)
Going up two at a time, each pair of rocketeers posed with their models before flight.
dsc02549.jpg (66137 bytes)
Having received the incorrect motors and no way to get that corrected, we took a shot with B6-6 and C6-5 motors.
dsc02550.jpg (88020 bytes)
About 1/4 second too late...  Fortunately, the ground was very soft!
dsc02551.jpg (82540 bytes)
Second flight, on a C6-5 was much better, but even with the heavy angle on the rod, the rocket drifted back to us, the past the field and into the trees.  UGH!
dsc02552.jpg (92142 bytes)
Next pair ready to go!
dsc02553.jpg (75060 bytes)
You can see the effect of the wind on the smoke trail shortly after ignition.
dsc02554.jpg (84905 bytes)
And we have LIFT OFF!
dsc02555.jpg (60351 bytes)
The C6-5 resulted in this rocket landing on the far side of the school roof (we were still trying to figure out the correct angle).  The wind actually HELPED us by blowing the rocket UP the roof, over the peak and down the other side to land near the building foundation!
dsc02556.jpg (87325 bytes)
All your rocket are belong to us!
dsc02557.jpg (91076 bytes)
Close up of the shark rocket, with dorsal.  I love it!
dsc02558.jpg (94583 bytes)
Perfect flight too!
dsc02559.jpg (96306 bytes)
Another great flight with fins swept forward and rearward on the same model.
dsc02560.jpg (92707 bytes)
Captain America and Batman protect the skies!
dsc02561.jpg (78337 bytes)
First up, Batman!
DSC02564a.jpg (67299 bytes)
Followed quickly by Captain America!
DSC02564b.jpg (76305 bytes)
Here is a nice sequence of shots of Captain America defending the skies!
dsc02571.jpg (74542 bytes)
Nice landing near the edge of the field.
dsc02572.jpg (111490 bytes)
Forward swept fins DO look kewl!
dsc02573.jpg (95557 bytes)
The moment of ignition!
dsc02574.jpg (85081 bytes)
She flies very well with fins configured like this!
dsc02575.jpg (116693 bytes)
Purple passion and the rainbow ready to go
dsc02576.jpg (94004 bytes)
WHOOSH!
dsc02577.jpg (102212 bytes)
Nice launch!
dsc02578.jpg (59899 bytes)
And great recovery!
dsc02579.jpg (84831 bytes)
ALMOST caught it!
dsc02580.jpg (101524 bytes)
Trying to hook up clips with cold hands is never easy
dsc02582.jpg (107938 bytes)
Last two of the day!
dsc02584.jpg (107288 bytes)
I missed the first of these launches because I had my camera tilted up a bit to capture the launch...  Rocket hung up on the pad and never moved.  I DID get a good shot of it after deployment though... LOL
dsc02585.jpg (83392 bytes)
Kristin's rocket put in a great flight on a B6-6 and deployed high enough in the air to actually get blow into the trees and stuck!  I felt terrible!
That's our day!  I hope you enjoyed this album as much as I did making it!  Let's look towards next year now!
