Merrimack, NH TARC Team
America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) is a nation wide
contest for schools and youth groups where teams of budding
rocket scientist design, build and fly a model rocket to meet
the needs of a specific challenge.
This years (2009)
challenge is to loft a raw hens egg, sideways, to an altitude
of exactly 750 feet and keep it in the air (from liftoff to
landing) for exactly 45 seconds. Any altitude above or
below 750 results in a penalty, any loft time above or below
45 seconds results in a penalty, with ZERO being a perfect
The photo album on
the left shows the trials and tribulations of just trying to
qualify for this event, with the 100 top qualifiers, nation
wide, will meet in Virginia in May for the finals, each vying
for $60,000 in scholarship money.
The Merrimack High
School, in Merrimack, NH scored a 7.12 with an altitude of 744
feet and an average time of 44.44 seconds. Simply
incredible! We should know by April 10th if they made
the top 100, and expectations are high with a score like that.
